Travel: language and emergency phrases
When you’re abroad, the biggest risk is not being understood quickly. Use short, clear phrases and carry proof of your medication.
Simple phrases to show or say
English: I take a blood thinner. I may be bleeding internally. Please check my head and abdomen.
Short version: Blood thinner • head injury • emergency
What to carry when traveling
- Medication list + a photo of prescriptions
- Insurance details and emergency contact
- Original medication packaging (helps staff identify the drug)
Make it easier for responders
- Wear a medical ID bracelet when doing higher-risk activities (hiking, scooters, diving, etc.).
- If you travel frequently, store your medical ID in multiple places (wallet + phone).
Emergency rule of thumb: if there is potential for internal bleeding (especially head injury), get urgent assessment and disclose your blood thinner immediately.
